“The victims have nothing.”

This quote was a common theme from speaker Jane White, the Chairwoman of the Michigan Human Trafficking Task-Force. Ms. White was the keynote speaker at the event, which the IHS Rotary Interact Club held on April 19th at the IHS Cafeteria to fundraise for the taskforce. Together with a tickets sales and a donation from the Ionia Rotary Club, the group donated over $600 dollars to the task force, to combat human trafficking in Michigan.

After the audience ate the spaghetti dinner served as part of the event, Jane White spoke for an hour about how her life has been impacted by human trafficking, and shared information that everyone should know about trafficking. The main part of her presentation included a question and answer session with the audience, in which many community members had questions about the red flags of human trafficking, and what every person can do about it.

The idea for the dinner arose in the early stages of the year within the Interact Club, with many members who had many connections to the issue. The Interact Club is a youth service organization quite similar to the National Honor Society in that it helps to provide community service and fundraise for local causes. Every Interact club is required to have a major project every year, this year, the dinner was the main project of the group. However, you can be a member of Interact all for years of high school, with little other requirements besides attendance at meetings and events.

As the dinner was a success the club is considering different options to follow up the dinner on the topic of human trafficking, lookout soon for more school wide events that can help support the cause. If you are interested in learning more about the Interact Club and joining, the members encourage you to join. Seniors Bobby Eppler, Parker Kirby, and Lindsey Wood are a few of the members you can talk to.
