Mr. Mike Holes coaches two sports, football and power lifting, at Ionia High School. Coach Holes also teaches two classes in school, Body Mechanics and Advanced Physical Education. As a teacher and a coach, Mr. Holes is someone who likes to help others improve on many things, so encourages students and helps people out however he can.  This is particularly true when it comes to his power lifters.

Shane Nutt at state competition for Power lifting finished first in his weight class. He beat the states deadlift by 55lbs. Shane also set  a new state total weight lifted by 5lbs. It is now 1330lbs. He plans to lift a lot more next year and set some more records.

Mr. Holes started power lifting himself in 2005, nearly twelve years ago. He brought power lifting to IHS where it is now a club sport. Power lifters practice multiple times each week and compete against their peers and other schools, seeing how much each person can lift in deadlifts, squats, and bench press lifts.

“The reason I started Powerlifting was to give people a chance to improve their lifting skills, compete against other people, and improves their focus on how much they know they can lift.”

— Powerlifting Coach, Mike Holes

Mr. Holes believes  power lifting is a good club for both men and women. There are a lot of people in power lifting, and each year more and more people want to do it and join. The club has become more popular every year and it gets a lot of new people, too.

It is easy to see why.  Mr. Holes’ power lifting team has made big gains recently, with multiple students breaking state and even national records.  In fact, 12 IHS lifters will be headed to national competition in Scranton, Pennsylvania, over spring break.

Many students know that Mr. Holes has really helped junior Shane Nutt make significant gains.  Shane, who went to nationals last year, recently broke his own state record for both deadlifting and total weight lifted.  On March 10th, Shane completed a 610 lbs. deadlift in state competition, breaking his own record.

Mr. Holes highly recommends this club because it is for both genders and a chance to improve one’s strength.
