An independent study class is where a student can ask a teacher to privately teach them during one of that teacher’s other classes. This year I have been taking AP Psychology during Mrs. Aves 5th hour, where she had Economics for the first semester and Sociology for the second. I chose to take this class because I am super interested in psychology and plan to pursue it in the future, but the regular hour the class runs is 3rd, which is during choir (and of course I can’t not do choir.) So far the class has only been a bit challenging to do alone, because of all of the partner work the class has done that I have had to do alone. Although because it is an AP class, it is like a college class where there are a lot of powerpoint presentations and not many small assignments.

While trying to read through the powerpoints, I have had some complications, like having to find a computer from other classrooms, not being able to find the links, and sometimes the powerpoints not having all of the information. Another thing that can be challenging is the fact that my grade mostly depends on my review and test scores since there are not many assignments that I have to turn in. Because of this, I only have a C in the class right now.

Still there are a few plus sides to taking a class individually. I am able to work at my own speed (which is usually faster than a normal class because I don’t have to deal with disruptions) and I have the opportunity to ask all of the questions I want.

Despite taking the class alone, I have found it enjoyable and interesting and am excited to learn more. If you don’t have room in your schedule for a class you want to take, or would even rather have more one on one time with a teacher, I highly suggest taking an independent study course.
