At the end of the school year, most of the seniors are excited for the big move from home. This is a time of planning, dollar store shopping and open house gift receiving. A dorm room is a great thing to look forward to, and I’ve found myself particularly excited.

Because of the scholarship opportunities, I applied to the Grand Valley Honors College. I didn’t end up receiving the scholarship that I wanted, but what I did recieve was an amazing dorm room opportunity. Most freshman dorm rooms are one room that is no bigger than 130 square feet. My dorm, however, is an apartment. Because I’ll be living in the honors college, I’ll get a four bedroom apartment to share with three other girls. This is amazing compared to standard freshman dorms because I get my own space and privacy. When I do want to hang out with my other roomates, we have a living room space with a couch and armchairs so we don’t have to invade each others privacy.

The next feature that stands out in my housing is the kitchen space. In the traditional dorm you’d have to bring your own microwave and mini fridge; expensive and minimal for the things you can cook. In my dorm, I have a full kitchen complete with an oven/stove, full sized fridge, and enough cabinet space for any food and dishes I want to bring.

The final thing that makes my dorm great is personal bathrooms. For every four person honors dorm there are two bathrooms. Communal bathrooms have always been the thing I’d dreaded most about living on campus. Now I have a space where I can keep my stuff in the bathroom and only have to share with one other person.

Although we do have to clean our own kitchen and bathroom, I’d still say the dorm is going to be a huge plus in college. It’s not much more expensive than a traditional dorm but is much cheaper than the average apartment. I’ll also make more friends and be closer to them.
