A couple of weeks ago, I had decided that I wanted to play in a level 4 tennis tournament. I had previously only played in level 5 tournaments and the smaller the number, the more competitive the tournaments are. The weekend that I had signed up to play in the level 4 turned out to be the week that I was diagnosed with mono and was trying to get over it and feel better. My mom was nervous about me playing because my spleen could become enlarged from mono and could rupture with vigorous physical activity or contact sports. I assured her that I would be fine because tennis is not a contact sport.

My first match was Friday night and I had more energy than I had the whole past week so I felt ready. As soon as the match started, I realized this was going to be one of the hardest matches I’ve ever played. She had a serve like a rocket that demanded fast hand-eye coordination to even return the ball back over the net. She also had a tough forehand that won her a lot of points. She beat me 6-1, 6-0; it was over quickly and there not many rally points. The next day, I played the girl that I lost to’s doubles partner. It was a pretty competitive match to start off, but she ended up taking the first set 6-3 after I lost a couple of close games at the end. I fell apart in the second set and couldn’t finish any games that went to deuce. She beat me 6-0 in the second set. It was tough tournament, but a good experience with better players. I hope to perform a little better in my next tournament when I’m healthy, energetic, and focused.
