Some high school students think they are invincible, but you would be stunned how many kids actually wear their seatbelts. “It’s such a habit. I get in the car and automatically put my seatbelt on without thinking twice about it,” junior Margot Cook said. Seatbelts have long been said to save lives, but is it really true?
Ionia County Road Commission investigator, Lonnie Finch believes in every bit of it. “I have never once come across a fatal accident and thought, ‘the seatbelt is what killed them,’” Mr. Finch said. He also added that 75% of the time a seatbelt is what would have saved the person. www.washingtonpost.com revealed a study that 3,688 deaths could have been evaded in 2010 if seatbelts were used.
If you are a teen that is convinced you are “too cool” to wear a seatbelt, you might want to think twice about that. “It’s not that big of an effort, but it will end up saving you in the long run,” said Mr. Finch. Not only will you end up paying a ticket, you could possibly end up paying something far more important: your life.
