Sportsmanship in any sport is the main focus and it is what makes the sport fun when everyone gets along. Pro Athletes are who everybody looks up to and wants to be like when they grow up. Tiger Woods caught some heat after his last outing at the Masters since he was seen on national television getting frustrated and using vulgar language. Woods has shown these un-sportsmanship qualities before and wasn’t criticized for it, why is he now? This is the question people are asking today and clearly they want the answer.
Coming off a huge win at Bay Hill, Tiger’s first PGA Tour win since the scandal of cheating on his wife, Tiger looked very impressive and seemed as if he was back from his slump. Everything changed at the Masters; Tiger couldn’t strike the ball like he did at Bay Hill and missed some easy putts. This is what made Tiger lose his temper and let his anger get the best of him.
Mitchell McPherson, Senior golfer at Ionia High School had this to say on Tiger’s display of sportsmanship. “I definitely think it was poor sportsmanship by Tiger, but I completely understand his frustration.” When asked about his reaction to how terrible Tiger played Mitchell said, “I am very disappointed and surprised after his win at Bay Hill.”
What it all comes down to is sportsmanship needs to be in check for all players even if they are pros. Kids see the lack of sportsmanship pros use and they think it is ok to use un-sportsman like qualities themselves. This concept needs to be talked about more with the athletes and there should be consequences if not followed. Many people believe Tiger Woods should be penalized for his actions at the Masters to show athletes you can’t get away with that behavior. All sports supporters hope coaches see sportsmanship as a key goal to teach athletes.
