With a Boys Lacrosse team now established as a club sport at IHS, many
students are curious as to what the girls are capable of. Numbers have increased with the weeks, and the girls are getting serious.
Girls Lacrosse got its start when Erica Velasco, a junior this year, had the determination to initiate it. With an absence of a coach for the girls, Erica has stepped up as a leader both on and off the field. “I went to a lacrosse camp over the summer and loved it. That is what gave me the idea to start up a school team.” Erica’s perseverance is really what got the whole thing to fall together. “I just became a nuisance about it. I would post things on Facebook and hang flyers in the school inviting girls to try out lacrosse.”
Sophomore Sidney Cooper was one of the girls that decided to attempt the sport this year. “I got guilted into playing by some of my friends, and then just fell in love.” The fact is, there are plenty of girls (21 committed to the team) that tried lacrosse out that would say the same thing. “Girls show up to practice, work hard, and just have fun,” Sidney tells us. “We all love it.”
The girls’ goal this season is solely to learn the ropes, try out different positions, and gain experience. They have consistently practiced for the past weeks Monday through Thursdays. Next year they are hoping for a coach, games, and most importantly a club sport status. Ready or not, girls lacrosse is coming to Ionia High School!
