Whether it’s the sound of music or experimental design, the Science Olympiad team has rallied with the best at this year’s regional competition. At the start of spring break, on March 31st, the Science Olympiad team headed to Alma College for their regional competition. After months of practice, third year coach, Mr.Ondersma, and his team were ready to take on their competition. The students took part in 22 different events including technical problem, the sound of music, forensics, water quality, experimental design, and disease detective, along with many others.
Overall, the team placed sixth out of eighteen teams, with the majority of the team taking home medals in their events. Team members, Naomi Grilley and Hope Simon took fifth in their event called disease detective, while Jesse Yeomans and Patrick Swinehart placed third in their event, giving their team the highest score of the day. “My favorite part would have to be the ability to apply topics covered in class much broader than we have time for in the classroom,” says Coach Ondersma.
Coach Ondersma is hoping to be able to expand the program in the coming years and looks forward to every new year that he continues to coach the Science Olympiad team. “I’m hoping to spur out efforts and make it back to states next year since we did not have the opportunity to do so this year,” says Coach Ondersma. He also hopes to take part in more invitationals next year and would like to participate in more events than in the previous years. If you have any questions concerning next year’s team, feel free to stop down to Mr. Ondersma’s room.
