Mr. Paton gives a "thumbs-up" to sophomores Kendell Alcala and Savannah Stone, who show respect in the hallways of Ionia High School.
Facebook: where all the rumors started. Many students heard of “new rules” that included no swearing and no making animal noises. Students at IHS complain about the unfairness of these rules and how the consequences are way too severe. However these rules are not new and have always been in effect. Mr. Paton, the Assistant Principal of IHS, says, “I believe there have been a few people that have gotten in trouble for these actions and are posting complaints about it on Facebook, which cause other people to believe that these actions are ‘new’ rules.” He also states, “People have the susceptibility to believe anything that’s written.”
These rules have been the topic of conversation for a lot of students here at IHS and have made a lot of students begin to question what’s true and what’s not. No swearing has always been a rule, along with not being disruptive. Making animal noises falls into the category of being disruptive and therefore that is why animal noises are banned. However the no waving rule is simply a joke. No one has ever gotten in trouble for this and never will, it is not considered vulgar or a gang sign. Mr. Paton states, “I do not understand where or how the students came up with the idea that waving was not allowed, but it in fact makes me laugh.”
Also Mr. Paton tells students that these problems will continue to happen and can never be fully eliminated, but he is trying to reduce them as much as possible in our school. He says he and the staff will use continuous reinforcement to eliminate these problems as much as they can. However, he explains to students that he has a skewed perception of these things because students may not stop doing these things all together, but just in front of him and other staff members. However, if all students work together to show respect in our school, there should not be any problems.
