For anyone to make it to the top as a choir at State is no easy feat to accomplish, but both of the IHS vocal groups that went to the state competion left with smiles on their faces and an immense sense of pride. After qualifying at Districts back in February, both Chorale and Choir went to State in Hudsonville in May. Choir came home with a division one rating and Chorale came home with an exemplary rating.
Both singing groups have been practicing nonstop since January on their pieces. For state each group had to add another music piece to the other two they had already performed at Districts. Each had two songs in two different languages and one song in English. One thing that does make State a bit easier is that the groups don’t have to sight read.”Having sight reading gone helps us tremendously at State. It allows us to focus on our music more then we can before Districts,” said Courtney Burgess, IHS junior. All of their focus is on their technique and making sure that they nail their performances.
After a long hard day at State, Chorale and Choir were treated to a wonderful day at the River Town Crossing Mall in Grandville. Everyone had lunch and spent quality time together and let loose after the long arduous day. For Ionia to get a division one rating consecutively, for more than one group, at State is an honor and privilege that should be recognized by everyone.
